Boss Racing took line honours for the offshore fleet in the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club’s Surf to City Yacht Race in a time of 10 hours 2 minutes and 40 seconds on Saturday. Frequent Flyer, a Firefly 850, had earlier taken line honours for the inshore fleet, finishing in five hours 16 minutes and three seconds.

The only Australian yacht race to have two different routes from the same start to the same finish, the Surf to City sends the inshore fleet north through the inland waterway from Southport and then through Moreton Bay to the finish line at Shorncliffe and the offshore fleet from Southport outside Stradbroke, North Stradbroke and Moreton islands before crossing Moreton Bay to the same finish.

The race allows entry from multihull and monohull boats.

The first monohull over the line in the inshore fleet was the Margaret Anne and Blackjack Too was the first offshore monohull to finish. At least 17 boats retired from the race, most late on Saturday evening as the breeze died.

On corrected time, division winners were as follows:
Inshore Monohull PHRF 2 Division: Marisa (RQYS)
Inshore Monohull PHRF 3 Division: Time Off (Mooloolaba)
Inshore Monohull SMS Division: Stay Tuned (Southport Yacht Club)
Inshore Multihull OMR Division: Frequent Flyer (MYCQ)
Inshore Multihull PHRF Division: Aquilo One (QCYC)
Inshore RL24 Division: Blue Tac (MBBC)
Offshore Monohull IRC Division: Black Jack Too (RQYS)
Offshore Monohull ORCI Division: Corrobboree (RQYS MYC)
Offshore Monohull PHRF 1 Division: Black Jack Too (RQYS)
Offshore PHRF 2 Division: La Balla (Southport Yacht Club)
Offshore Multihull OMR Division: Chillpill (MYCQ)
Offshore Multihull PHRF Division: Boss Racing (QCYC)

Whale tails aid research

Lightly spotted or black splashed, deckle edged or bedecked with barnacles, the underside of a humpback whale tail fluke is the surest way to identify a particular animal. The East Coast Whale Watch Catalogue, a humpback whale fluke identification research project established in 2008 by Peta Beeman, is assembling a database of tail flukes using…
